You’re not a bad mom, you’re a super mom

It is OK not to be able to do it all. Really, it is. We live in a world where the expectation for a mom is to do all the things. Literally, all the things – everything at home, everything in a super demanding job, and all the self-care in the world. I’m a psychiatrist focused on empowering women and I’m here to tell you that it is okay not to do all the things. I am a physician and a mom of two and I do not do all the things. I do the things important to me. I do the things that bring value into my life and the lives of my family members. I do not do the things that weigh me down. I do not do things out of societal pressure or peer pressure. I own my life and my time.

In order to bring balance into your life, it is important to understand what things you do out of obligation and what things you do because they bring meaning into your life. As a super mom, the goal is to get you to own your life in a way that brings you purpose but does not run you down. Being a super mom is about balance in every aspect of life.

If you do 3 things today, make it these 3 things:

1) Think about what brings you joy.

2) Go after that joy.

3) Bring your kids on that chase for joy.

The purpose of the above exercise is to practice self-compassion, an essential skill to live a life of excellence, and to model such a life for the little humans we are trying to raise.
